Basketball is the basic fundamental of streetball and like many other things, the skills can be self-taught by dedicated practice and learning. Kobe Bryant's success is partly attributed to his great coaches and trainers, but the person who deserves most credit for his accomplishment is Kobe himself. There must be a reason in having a stellar talent, and one of the most important factor is consistent practicing!

Ball handling skills is the most important factor you must achieve before doing more complicated tricks. First, you need to learn how to handle the ball effectively or in other words, how to dribble well. Dribbling a basketball may seem easy, but to dribble smartly and give your defender a hard time, you've got to learn some special tricks and practice diligently.

Basic Tips in this post are the Dribbling Dos and Don'ts that you must understand.

The basic dribbling skill is achieved by getting used to dribbling using your fingertips, NOT your palm. At the end of practice, check your hand. If your palm is clean and your fingers are dirty, it means you're dribbling correctly.

In a basketball game you must not keep dribbling until you are no longer guarded. You should pass the ball as soon as you see a teammate become open. If you keep dribbling, your teammates will stop trying to get open after a while, as they know they won't get the ball from you. Learn to dribble by feel so that you can always keep your head up to spot defenders and open teammates.

In a real game quick defenders have plenty of time to steal the ball, from the moment you push the ball to the floor until it bounces back to your fingertips. Hard dribbles shorten the time that you have no control over the ball and accordingly, minimize the risk of losing the ball to your defender.

Indonesian Ballers at Malaysia

THE brief appearance of visiting streetballers from the Ball Star Indonesia added extra excitement to the fifth and final leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Berjaya Times Square on Sunday.

Although the trio of Bayu Radityo a.k.a Lunatic, Gobel a.k.a Trickz and Okto a.k.a Total Package missed their opening match in the open (non-Chinese) category, they had the chance to thrill the crowd in an exhibition match against the previous winners of the In Search of Freestylists on the main court set up with a special surface for the occasion.

The 29-year-old Bayu said they failed to show up in time to feature in the main competition because they had too much fun at a show a day earlier.

New Streetball Movie!

A brand new feature film, based on the life of two streetballers will headline the Urban World/BET Film Festival in Manhattan next month.

The story centers on two junior college basketball players from broken homes in St. Louis, one from the south side, the other from the north, but both hoping to use sports as their escape.

"This could be any neighborhood in the U.S.," said Matthew Krentz, the film's writer, director and co-star opposite former Missouri guard Jimmy McKinney and Patrick Rooney. "There's hundreds of thousands of athletes who aren't going pro, who are just trying to get scholarships and coping with life on a daily basis.

"And there's a lot of stuff in their environments that are holding them back."

McKinney, 24, was a standout at Vashon High School before entering Missouri as a highly heralded recruit. Though his college career was somewhat frustrating, he's been successful in three seasons playing professionally in Germany.

Taking Basketball to the Streets

With hip-hop music blaring and an emcee for an announcer, an urban basketball team called the Platinum Streetballers played a fast-paced, in-your-face game against members of the Harrisonburg Men’s League.

Players on both teams dunked, dribbled and danced around the court while a 200-person crowd cheered them on. The ref sported blue jeans, a sideways baseball cap, an upturned shirt collar and a bandanna on his arm while everyone else — even some of the players — wore enough “bling” to put even De Beers to shame.

“That’s how you do it, baby!” cheered Dewey Jackson, the Platinum team’s emcee, who is known to his crew and on the radio as “Formula.” “Yeah, baby!”

But double-dribbles aside, the event was more than just good New York-style fun.

Friday’s game was actually a recruitment tool and fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County, officials said. From now until May, Platinum is “performing” 13 free shows for Boys & Girls Clubs up and down the East Coast, Jackson said.

Friday’s show in Harrisonburg was the third stop on their tour.

“We aren’t doing anything else on a Friday night,” joked Joe Turner, a 23-year-old forward for the Harrisonburg team. “We’re just here to support the kids and have a good time.”

Street Ball

Having a good time by showing off is at the heart of streetball, Jackson said.

Streetball is essentially an inner-city form of basketball where the rules are relaxed, they said. Players tend to perform lots of flashy ball-handling tricks, such as crossovers and fake-outs, while also talking a little “trash.”

From the feel of Friday’s game, testosterone pumping slam-dunks and high-tossed alley-oops are streetball requirements.

“Usually there’s trash-talking, but they’re not doing that here,” said Katie Burner, a 22-year-old audience member from Luray.

Players call their own fouls, while traveling, double-dribbling and rough hand-checking are acceptable, Jackson said.

“We bring the streets to basketball,” Jackson said. “It’s all about the streets.”

Streetball is growing in popularity, especially since the sport began to be featured on ESPN and in video games in recent years.

Players on the Platinum team hail from cities from all over the Northeast and use nicknames on the court. Hustle, Big Jerry, Black and Johnny Blaze were among Friday’s players.

They Loved It

Although the Platinum Streetballers specialize in their sport and won the game 115-92, the Harrisonburg team held its own.

Derrick Fields of the Harrisonburg team, a crowd favorite, pulled dozens of tricks such as dribbling the ball with his knees and pulling the shirt of his defender over his head.

“Ohhhhhh!” the audience yelled after Fields dunked. They loved it.

“It’s fascinating,” said Wanda Yetter of Elkton. “I feel like I’m at a Harlem Globetrotters game.”

Her son, Brandon, and Nick Clements, 13, of Shenandoah both agreed.

“It’s soooo bizarre,” said Brandon Yetter, 11, who is planning to try out for school basketball next year. “I just want to be out there.”

“It looks funner than regular basketball,” Clements said. “You can play around more and I like that.”

Dazzling Streetball tour at Gila Ridge

Some of the best playground-style players in the world stopped in Yuma on Thursday as part of the 2008 Hustle Up Streetball Tour hosted by Gila Ridge High School.

The tour is made up of current and former members of the And1 Mixtape Tour, who have been seen on ESPN's streetball series. They have been dubbed the Harlem Globetrotters of Generation X.

Here are some streetball moves - tricks you should learn in order to get some respect.

1. See No Evil

This move is a signature trick from Tru Baller. How to do the trick; make sure you wear a loose or a baggy basketball short. (so you can place the ball inside it). Do some cross the legs dribble and start positioning your body close to your defender (make sure your defender is not significantly taller than you!). Grab the ball on your strong hand and curl it over your defenders head, turn your body and while turning back, place the ball inside your pants.

Well if you can't imagine how to do it here is a video that explains it clearly. Although the players in the vid suck! ha ha ha.

Japan, Hong Kong (but not shown), the Philippines, New Zealand, and Australia: And1: Asia Pacific Tour is as much a basketball exhibition as a cultural one, from the corporate madness that is Japan to the third-world ghettos of the Philippines.

Three things stand clear from this video: 1) Helicopter must have, pound for pound, inch for inch, the best vertical of ANY And1 player EVER, and this video showcases that; 2) Aaron "AO" Owens is the most accurate passer I've ever seen not in the NBA; 3) a lot of these players can be complete, hypocritical beyotches.

Case in point: It's ok to push and shove your opponent, rip their shirt off, and throw a ball in their face...but when they do it to you, you hold your face as though you're hurt? C'mon, even Jordan acknowledged that risk, saying, after Allen Iverson famously crossed him over, that you burn and you get burned--it's the risk of it all. Alimoe, despite his amazing skills that come back in this video, is a big practitioner of "I can do it to you, but you can't do it to me." Hot Sauce, not present, is next on the list.

Highlights:
- Spyda and Helicopter each get a local in Australia and play "you try to dunk on me, then I'll try to dunk on you." Ridiculous when you think that the opponents know what type of shot is coming.
- A Filipino kid PUNKS Alimoe majorly, and pulls a move that has to be in the Top 10 of the exhibition moves (meaning moves taken from the Rucker tournament or in-game somewhere, are on a whole 'nother level).
- 50's winning dunk in the Spyda (New Skool) v. 50 (Old Skool) Dunk Off.
- End Credits. This features some nasty trick shots, and starts off with a hilarious interview by AO of a guy who says he's Chinese (looks like it), but was born in Mauritius, which is off the coast of Africa, but grew up in India. AO spins him silly like he does players on the court, asking constantly if he's Indian or African.

It's worth your money, finally. The players are new, with new moves, traveling to places where their opponents haven't been overexposed to the AND1 phenomenon. The crowds are genuine and excited, as is the intensity of most of the games.

So here is the basic theory

Dribble the ball in your dominant hand (let's pretend you're right-handed for the purpose of this example).

Use your body as a slight barrier between the ball and your defender, but still face your defender.

Take a step with your left foot.

Follow that with a step with your right foot.

Let the defender move in the direction you appear to be headed.

Switch the ball to your left hand with a quick, low bounce directly in front of your defender.

Take a step with your left foot around the defender.

Drive to the basket.

But again you got to watch how pros do it, certainly its gotta be quick aight.
